All blockchain functionality in Clash of Streamers is made possible through the Ethereum blockchain. However, before we discuss exactly what you can do with the blockchain in Clash of Streamers, let’s take a step back and first discuss blockchain technology.
So, what is the Ethereum blockchain?
The blockchain itself is a decentralized technology, meaning that no one party is in control and can make decisions on behalf of others.
For example, Epic Games is the sole company in control and in charge of the game Fortnite.
This gives them the power and ability to do any of the following:
- They can delete (or remove) access to your account, getting rid of all of your progress (or loot)
- They can shut down their servers, preventing anybody from playing the game
While these are unlikely scenarios, they are definite possibilities when data is under the control of one central party (in this case, Epic Games).
However, with the blockchain, data is stored and maintained globally, by thousands of different people across the world. No sole party can choose to delete or modify any of your data without the approval of others.
Looking back to the previous scenario, if Fortnite (or a chunk of it) was on the blockchain, the game, and your progress in the game, would be immortal. Epic Games would not be able to delete your accounts, remove access, or anything like that.
This is what I mean when I talk about the decentralized nature of the blockchain!
Now that we’ve discussed the decentralized nature of the blockchain, how exactly does the Ethereum blockchain come into play?
The Ethereum blockchain can be seen as the second iteration of blockchain technologies (the first being Bitcoin). Unlike Bitcoin which was simply used as a means of transferring wealth between two parties, Ethereum is quite different.
Where Bitcoin can be compared to old flip phones, Ethereum can be compared to smartphones with touchscreens, housing downloadable (and creatable) apps, and everything in between.
Essentially, the most significant difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin is that on the Ethereum blockchain, anybody can kind of create their own ‘app’ which exists on the Ethereum blockchain. These are often called ‘dapps’ (decentralized apps), since blockchain is decentralized by nature.
This is how Clash of Streamers is able to have blockchain functionality!
Reading through this overview, you might assume that the blockchain is extremely simple. This could not be further from the truth! There is a lot more info related to blockchain on the technical side of things, which we will not be discussing here.
This overview should give you enough knowledge to understand the rest of the Ethereum concepts, and eventually apply that knowledge to Clash of Streamers.
